Save The Day Stories: Kaylee + Zach Edition
Wedding Day Recap: Styling Tips and Lessons from a Big Day
As a wedding day stylist, no two weddings are ever the same, and Zach and Kaylee's big day at the Omni Montelucia proved that once again. It was a whirlwind of bustling, steaming, and problem-solving, and I’m here to share my recap—and some helpful tips for all you brides-to-be.
The Steaming Struggle: Veils Are Tricky!
Kaylee’s mid-length, pearl-embellished veil was stunning but challenging. Made from a soft, stretch mesh tulle, it showed wrinkles more prominently than coarser fabrics. Even after multiple passes with my steamer, I couldn’t achieve a perfectly smooth finish. Here’s the lesson: transport matters. To keep your veil pristine, avoid folding it; instead, store it flat or hang it carefully. And if your veil fabric is particularly delicate, consider professional pressing before your wedding.
Quick Fixes: Double-Stick Tape for the Win
One of the bridesmaids wore a gorgeous dress from Lulu’s with a high slit she felt was too revealing. Double-stick tape came to the rescue! I used it to discreetly secure the overlap of fabric. Pro tip: always test the tape on your fabric before the big day to ensure it won’t damage delicate materials.
The Beauty Kit: Bobby Pins Are Essential
When it came to hair, I had to redo Kaylee’s style multiple times throughout the day. This reminded me how crucial it is to have both light and dark bobby pins on hand to match hair colors. I also used a teasing comb and hairspray—staples for any wedding day beauty kit. Brides, take note: if your stylist doesn’t bring these essentials, consider packing your own emergency kit.
Bustle Woes: A Quick Save
Kaylee’s dress featured a five-point button-and-loop bustle with a pearl marker for easy identification. However, one of the loops broke during the day. Thankfully, my white safety pins blended in seamlessly and held everything together. If you’re planning a heavy bustle, talk to your tailor about reinforcing those loops to avoid mid-reception stress.
Other Must-Have Tools
Here are the unsung heroes of the day:
- Lint roller & deodorant-removing sponge: Perfect for last-minute touch-ups on jackets and dresses.
- Button + Bustle Hook: A lifesaver for dresses with loops and buttons.
- Scissors: Essential for cutting tape and trimming loose threads.
- White safety pins: Blended beautifully with Kaylee’s dress and saved the day.
A Note on Bridal Shoe Comfort
The wedding party wore Louboutin shoes, and though I was braced for foot-related complaints, no one came to me needing assistance. At another wedding, the bride used Aspercreme spray to numb her feet before wearing her platform Jimmy Choos—a popular hack worth considering if you’re rocking sky-high heels.
Final Thoughts
This wedding was a great reminder that preparation is everything. A well-stocked emergency kit can handle almost any situation, from steaming stubborn fabrics to fixing busted bustles. Brides, communicate with your stylist or coordinator about your dress details, veil fabric, and comfort needs ahead of time—you’ll thank yourself later.
